The Vignette in Switzerland and Austria. Beware!

Driving abroad is full of surprises… It’s common to get some fine over there. That’s because we are not familiar with the rules of the country we are visiting. At least that’s my experience… In the case which we're dealing with, Switzerland and Austria, it’s very important that you buy the Vignette before you enter with your car in the highway. The Vignette or Vigneta is a sticker you have to put in the windshield to show you have already paid the highway. There is no toll in which you can pay the fee. This sticker can be bought in a gas station or border crossing. In Switzerland the Vignette is valid during a year and costs 30 €. In Austria you can buy the Vigneta for a shorter period of time like two weeks or a month and it’s about 10 €. If you are caught without Vignette you will pay a fine of more than 600 €. I had problems crossing the border between Slovakia and the Czech Republic which have the same system in the highways. They fined us with 1.000 Slovak Crowns… Thank goodness that was less than 30 €, now it is a funny anecdote...
